YNAB vs Goodbudget

Both are envelope budgets. Goodbudget has a free plan and a cheaper Premium, built for manual, envelope-by-envelope budgeting with a shared household login; YNAB is one paid plan with bank sync included, separate logins and more countries.

The verdict

Pick Goodbudget if you want envelope budgeting at the lowest cost, you’re happy to enter transactions yourself, and you’d value lessons on the method itself. Its free plan is enough for a simple budget, and Premium costs less than YNAB.

Pick YNAB if you want bank transactions to arrive on their own without paying extra, each person in your household to have their own login, or you live outside the US. YNAB costs more, but bank sync and file import in more formats are both in its one plan.

Who YNAB is for

YNAB is for people who want envelope budgeting with the busywork taken out. Its method is to give every dollar a job and assign your money to zero, and its tools support that: targets for goals, a loan planner and reports, with human support when you’re stuck.

Direct Import is included and connects to banks in the US, Canada, the UK and select European countries. YNAB Together lets up to six people share one subscription with their own logins. It runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, Android and Apple Watch, for $14.99 a month or $109 a year after a 34-day trial.

Who Goodbudget is for

Goodbudget is a digital version of the cash-envelope system. You fill envelopes from your income and spend from them, and it’s comfortable with you entering each transaction by hand. It invests heavily in teaching: courses, a podcast, guides and videos on envelope budgeting.

The free plan, which never expires, gives you 10 regular and 10 annual envelopes, 1 account, 2 devices and a year of history. Premium, at $10 a month or $80 a year, adds bank sync in the US through Plaid, unlimited envelopes and accounts, 5 devices and 7 years of history. A household shares one login across its devices.

The real differences

Manual or automatic

This is the core trade-off. On Goodbudget’s free plan you enter transactions by hand; bank sync is a Premium feature, available only in the US. YNAB includes bank connections in its only plan and in more countries. Some people budget better when they type in every purchase; others stop after a few weeks. Be honest about which you are.

Price

Goodbudget Free costs nothing. Goodbudget Premium is $80 a year; YNAB is $109. Over three years on annual plans that’s $240 against $327. If the free plan’s limits suit you (one account and 10 regular envelopes is enough for a simple budget), the gap is wider still.

Sharing

Goodbudget’s household shares a single login, synced across devices. That’s simple, but you both sign in as the same user. YNAB Together gives up to six people their own logins on one subscription.

Getting data in and out

Both import bank files on the web: Goodbudget takes QFX, OFX and CSV; YNAB adds QIF and can import on the iPad too. Both export transactions as CSV, and YNAB also exports the plan and has a public API.

Switching between them

From Goodbudget to YNAB: export your transactions as CSV, then import them into YNAB on the web or iPad. Set up your categories in YNAB to match your old envelopes, and assign this month’s money.

From YNAB to Goodbudget: export your plan from YNAB on the web for its CSV files, and import the transactions into Goodbudget on the web. On the free plan, remember the one-account and one-year-of-history limits; you may want to import only recent months.

Where Kemback fits

Kemback’s Free plan includes envelope budgeting with no time limit and no cap on accounts or transactions, and it can switch to a category budget without losing anything. Each person in a household of two signs in separately, with shared and private accounts. It imports OFX, QFX, QIF and CSV files, reads YNAB’s export, and exports everything as JSON or CSV. It adds a register with splits and reconciliation, bills, rules and goals.

Like Goodbudget Free, it has no automatic bank sync today; that’s planned for Kemback’s Plus plan, which isn’t on sale yet. It runs on the web, with an iPhone app in beta and Android in development. See Kemback vs YNAB and Kemback vs Goodbudget.

Questions

Is YNAB or Goodbudget cheaper?

Goodbudget. It has a free plan, and Premium is $80 a year or $10 a month, against YNAB's $109 a year or $14.99 a month, when checked in October 2026.

What do you get with Goodbudget for free?

Ten regular and ten annual envelopes, one account, two devices and one year of history, with no time limit. Premium adds bank sync in the US, unlimited envelopes and accounts, five devices and seven years of history.

Are YNAB and Goodbudget the same method?

Both are envelope budgets: you divide income among categories before you spend it. YNAB frames it as giving every dollar a job and assigning your money to zero; Goodbudget uses the language of envelopes directly.

Which is better for couples?

YNAB Together gives each person their own login, for up to six people on one subscription. Goodbudget shares one household login across your devices, so you both sign in with the same account.

Can I move from Goodbudget to YNAB?

Yes, by file. Goodbudget exports transactions as CSV, and YNAB imports CSV on the web and iPad. Your envelopes and their balances you'd set up again in YNAB.

Is there a free alternative to both?

Kemback's Free plan has envelope budgeting with no limit on accounts or transactions and no time limit, with separate sign-ins for a household of two. It doesn't connect to banks automatically yet; that's planned for its Plus plan, which isn't on sale yet.
