Switch from YNAB, and bring your whole register

Kemback reads YNAB's export directly: every account and transaction, with category groups, split transactions, flags and memos, and transfers linked. Budget with envelopes or categories, shared with your household, on a complete free plan.

How the switch works

  1. Export from YNAB. In YNAB on the web, click your plan's name at the top left and choose Export Plan. Unzip the download: you need the file whose name ends in Register.
  2. Create your free Kemback account and choose Switch from YNAB.
  3. Check what's coming across. Each YNAB account becomes an account here. Its starting balance comes with it, so the history adds up to YNAB's balance; or enter today's balance from your bank instead.
  4. Bring it across. Transfers between your accounts are linked, split transactions keep their parts, category groups keep their categories, and flags become tags.
  5. Build a budget from your history, in envelope or category mode, and add your bills.

Questions about switching from YNAB

Will my whole YNAB history come across?

Yes. YNAB's Export Plan gives you a zip with your register: every account and transaction in the plan. Kemback reads it directly, with category groups, split transactions, flags (as tags), memos and cleared status.

What about my balances?

Each account in YNAB's register starts with its starting balance, so the history adds up to the balance YNAB had when you exported. You can enter today's balance from your bank instead, and Kemback sets the opening balance to match.

Can I keep giving every dollar a job?

Yes. Kemback has an envelope mode in which every dollar of income is assigned, and a category mode if you'd rather not, on the same data. Your monthly assignments don't come across, but Kemback can suggest a budget from your history.

Are transfers matched up?

Yes. YNAB records both sides of a transfer between your accounts, and Kemback links them, so they don't count as spending or income.

Is it free?

Yes. Switching, envelope and category budgets, bills, alerts and reports are all on the Free plan.
