Quicken Classic vs Quicken Simplifi

Both come from Quicken Inc. Classic is desktop software for Windows and Mac with bill pay, tax reports and business tools; Simplifi is a lighter cloud app for the web and phones. Simplifi can't read Classic data directly, so moving means CSV files.

The verdict

Stay with or choose Quicken Classic if you rely on bill pay, tax reports, investment analytics, or rental property and business tools, or if you want your data file on your own computer. It’s the deeper product, and it reads and writes more file formats.

Choose Quicken Simplifi if you want to see your money on the web and your phone without a desktop install, and a spending plan suits you better than a detailed category budget. It’s the lighter product, and simpler to share with a partner who has their own login.

Who Quicken Classic is for

Classic is for people who want full control of a detailed financial record. It’s desktop software for Windows and Mac (“Your data stays local”), with a companion mobile app and web access. Budgets use categories and tags, with no limit on either.

Its tiers add depth as you go up. Premier includes bill pay; the range brings investment analytics and tax reports; Business & Personal adds rental property and business tools. When we checked in October 2026, first-year prices for new members, billed annually, were $4.49 a month for Starter, $6.99 for Deluxe, $7.99 for Premier and $10.99 for Business & Personal. Classic renews every year at the then-current price, which Quicken doesn’t show consistently, so check it before you renew.

Who Quicken Simplifi is for

Simplifi is for people who want an answer to “what can I spend?” more than a ledger. Its Spending Plan starts with income, takes off bills and subscriptions, and adjusts as you spend. It also offers savings goals, projected cash flow, and investments with cost basis and performance.

It runs on the web, iPhone and Android, with no desktop app, and some features aren’t on mobile. You can share it with one additional member, who needs their own Quicken ID but not their own subscription. It’s $6.99 a month billed annually; when checked there was a first-year offer of $3.99 a month for new members ordering directly.

The real differences

Desktop versus cloud

This is the root of everything else. Classic keeps a data file on your computer; you can install it on every computer in your household, but only one can have the file open at a time. Simplifi lives online, so you and one partner can each sign in from any browser or phone.

Depth

Classic does more: bill pay in Premier, tax reports, investment analytics, rental property and business tools. Simplifi leaves out bill pay and focuses on spending, goals, cash flow and investments. If you file taxes from Quicken reports or pay bills through it, Simplifi isn’t a like-for-like move.

Getting data in and out

Classic imports Web Connect (QFX), QXF, CSV and QIF files, and exports QXF, QIF and reports to Excel or PDF. Simplifi imports and exports CSV on the web only.

Price

Simplifi’s standard price, $6.99 a month billed annually, matches Classic Deluxe’s first-year price. Both renew at the then-current price, so compare what you’ll pay in year two, not just year one.

Switching between them

Quicken says plainly that data can’t be imported directly between the two products. To move from Classic to Simplifi, connect your accounts in Simplifi, and if you want older history, bring it across as CSV files on the web. Categories, budgets and reports won’t come with it automatically.

Going the other way, Simplifi exports transactions as CSV from the web app, and Classic can import CSV. Quicken’s support site has a guide for moving from Classic to Simplifi; read it before you start.

Where Kemback fits

Kemback is for people leaving Quicken who want a cloud app without giving up a real register. Its Switch from Quicken wizard reads a QIF export from Classic and checks every balance to the cent. On a Free plan with no time limit you get splits, transfers and reconciliation, envelope or category budgets, bills, rules, reports, and a household of two with separate sign-ins and private accounts. You can export everything as JSON or CSV.

Be clear on what it lacks: automatic bank sync (planned for Plus, which isn’t on sale yet), investment tracking, tax reports and bill pay. If you depend on those, Classic remains the stronger fit. Compare: Kemback vs Quicken Classic and Kemback vs Quicken Simplifi.

Questions

Can I move from Quicken Classic to Simplifi?

Yes, but not directly: Quicken says data can't be imported directly between the two products. Simplifi imports CSV files on the web, so you'd export transactions from Classic and import them as CSV, or connect your accounts in Simplifi and start fresh.

Is Simplifi cheaper than Quicken Classic?

It depends on the tier. When checked in October 2026, Simplifi was $6.99 a month billed annually; Classic ran from $4.49 a month (Starter) to $10.99 (Business & Personal). Classic renews at the then-current price, so check the renewal price before you buy.

Does Simplifi have bill pay?

No. Quicken lists bill pay as a Quicken Classic feature (in Premier), not part of Simplifi.

Where does Quicken Classic keep my data?

Classic is desktop software for Windows and Mac, and Quicken describes it as keeping your data local, in a data file on your computer. It also has a companion mobile app and web access. Simplifi keeps your data online, so you sign in from the web or your phone.

Can two people use Quicken at the same time?

Classic can be installed on any number of computers in your household, but a data file can't be open on two computers at once. Simplifi shares with one additional member, who signs in with their own Quicken ID.

Is there a free alternative to both?

Kemback has a free plan with no time limit and a Switch from Quicken wizard that reads a QIF export. It doesn't have automatic bank sync, investments, tax reports or bill pay yet; sync is planned for its Plus plan, which isn't on sale yet.
